The future of Indian agriculture, certainly, is well tied in with drones and one of the most powerful uses drones have been providing is by way of precision farming. Advanced sensors and multispectral cameras on drones deliver highly defined aerial imagery of extensive farmland in a period that traditionally would take hours to generate. This helps farmers identify pest infestation areas, nutrient deficiency zones, and water stress conditions. Such timely insights provide scope for intervention, make resource use optimal, reduce what is wasted, and improve crop yields.

Further, drones play a crucial role in analyzing soil health. They can measure levels of soil moisture and nutrient profiles so farmers can use this information to apply precise fertilization and irrigation strategies. For Indian farmers, especially those working with small and fragmented pieces of land, drones become a cost-effective and efficient way to perform the tasks traditionally done in a labor-dependent manner and with operational costs. The country’s economy largely depends on agriculture, yet the latter is fraught with many ills. One of these is land fragmentation. About 86 percent of farms were classified as either ‘marginal’ or ‘small’ during the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) assessment and covered an area of less than two hectares. This patchwork of tiny plots of land makes mechanization a task, as productivity is, by and large, limited.
Traditional farming methods are also very common in India and are preventing progress. These are less productive and cannot be used in times of changing climatic conditions and resource availability. But drones are an upgrade that can provide new solutions to these limitations.

While it is still in its early stages, the potential for drones to be integrated into Indian agriculture is immense.
