Malpe beach in Udupi district, one of the main tourist attractions in southern Karnataka, has become the first beach in India to have free public Wi-Fi service.

Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj launched the 24×7 facility at a function at the beachrecently. He said the duration of free Wi-Fi access would be extended later.
Madhwaraj said the Malpe beach committee had spent Rs 80 lakh for beach development works last year.
Recently, the Indian Railways’ arm RailTel which provides Internet services as RailWire via its fiber network,launched free public Wi-Fi service in partnership with Google at Mumbai Central.It is planning to bring similar service to about 100 railway stations by the end of 2016, and eventually expand to 400 railway stations in next few years.
