The European Commission has decided to bring over-the-top (OTT) players like WhatsApp and Skype under some kind of regulatory framework to create a level playing field between them and mobile operators, according to a Financial Times report.
The development comes at a time when the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has come under criticism from the proponents of net neutrality for trying to do the same in the country, reports fe Bureau in New Delhi.
The Trai-initiated consultative process is underway, with stakeholders in the process of submitting responses to the proposal.
The European Commission has also promised a “comprehensive investigation” into platforms such as Amazon and Google to look at how they display search results and use customer data.
