Greg Moran’s passion about environmental sustainability and his fascination about the opportunities present in India in terms of building a scalable business, drove him to launch Zoomcar, a self drive car rental service in India.
From his business school days, he was very much fascinated about India after getting to know about the opportunities present here through his friends. After working in the clean energy sector in Hyderabad he realised that the energy space in India is highly bureaucratic and it takes at least four-ten years to even initiate the process of doing something big and disruptive in this vertical. “I am an incredibly impatient person so I wasn’t able to do that for long,” adds Moran.
In 2011-12 they saw that most of the cities in India are a 7-8 times denser than most of the dense cities in the US or Europe. Apart from that the car ownership rate was 12-15% which was incredible low. “We then merged these things together and realised the idea of doing self drive car rental service that could give people a car on demand in a virtual fashion where they don’t have to own a car,” adds Moran.
It was in February 2013 that they launched their operations in Bengaluru. “We were focused on building an app/website that would enable our user to book a car in 15 seconds,” says Moran.
“Our business is interesting because we are operating in the nexus between hardware and software. We have a very sophisticated technology that allows us to look at the actual running of the car and be able to tell us through that data how the customer is driving, you can actually tabulate and formulate real time driver’s score,” says Moran.
