Intel’s third generation Core vPro processor platform delivers embedded security and better manageability. By KTP Radhika
Security is a prime concern for IT managers as is the ability to managed large fleets of desktops. In this backdrop, Intel has launched its third generation Core vPro processor platform. Based on the vendor’s 22 nm micro-architecture with 3D trigate transistor technology, the vPro processor platform provides increased security, better performance and improved energy efficiency.
The Core vPro platform provides security by integrating hardware and software solutions. For this, Intel has incorporated four methods of protection namely threat management, identity and access, data protection, and monitoring and remediation.
Rick Echevarria, VP, IAG and GM of the Business Client Platforms Division, Intel, said, “Next generation security should leverage both hardware and software. Cyber threats continues to become more sophisticated and global. According to security sources, over 600,000 social media IDs are compromised every day. To help protect identity threats, Intel has incorporated its Identity Protection Technology (IPT) with Public Key Infrastructure into Core vPro processors for better user protection.”
It is an integrated chipset-based security feature, which provides hardware-level secure access to online accounts and enterprise network resources. Apart from this, the Core vPro processor platform also features Anti-Theft Technology 4.0 with pre-boot authentication thanks to an improved BIOS, Secure Key with true random number generation and OS Guard for improved malware protection.
“This level of security takes computing with confidence to a whole new level. Building identity protection into the hardware has raised the bar for security and it has made this new generation of processors the most secure computing platform available for business.” explained Echevarria. Apart from added security, Intel has also fine-tuned the performance aspect.
Srinivas Tadigadapa, Director – Sales & Marketing (West), Intel South Asia, said, “The third generation Intel Core vPro processor platform offers improved performance, enhanced visual capabilities and secure manageability.” The increased energy efficiency of the vPro processors enables thinner and lighter designs that consume less power. Manageability is another area of focus. Powered with Active Management Technology (AMT) vPro processor platforms can be used to remotely manage computing issues. AMT adds hardware to business PCs that help IT staff manage them remotely, despite the state of the operating system.
Tadigadapa said, “For example, retailers with point-of-sale machines, digital signs or other intelligent devices can remotely diagnose and fix problems over the network so that customer transactions are not interrupted and sales are not lost. These improvements aim to accelerate the transition from isolated, fixed-function devices to intelligent systems.” The vPro processor platform supports enhanced Keyboard-Video-Mouse (KVM) remote control, supporting up to three independent displays.
“On the market side, the vPro platform has seen strong adoption over many different verticals.” said Tadigadapa. The company is getting support for Core vPro from OEMs, service providers, channel and software partners. “70% of the Fortune 500 and 54% of the worldwide Global 100 companies are purchasing Intel Core vPro for their desktop and notebook PCs. Integration of these systems into enterprise environments will occur over time as part of regular refresh cycles.” added Tadigadapa.
Systems based on vPro processor platforms will be available in the market with a portfolio of options over the course of 2012. This will include the full spectrum of designs including convertible ultrabooks, All-in-ones (AIOs), small form factor and tower desktop PCs, and notebooks.
