Kolkata will see the roll-out of IT-enabled post office savings accounts today, starting with the Tollygunge head post office.
Official sources at the Chief Postmaster General, West Bengal circle, said with the launch of the Core Banking Solution, 1,26,335 account-holders in the Tollygunge HO can access faster banking services through internet, mobile devices and ATMs.
The services are already available in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Assam and Andhra Pradesh.
Under the project, savings bank accounts and other instruments like NSC and KVP have also been digitised and will be available to users. Apart from significantly reducing the operational costs of the Department of Post, it will provide faster and better service to account holders, sources said.
Net-banking, RTGS and NEFT services will be available for customers and the Post Office ATM will facilitate the customer to withdraw money anytime.
Customers would be able to withdraw money anywhere using ATM cards and services of electronic transfer of money will be made available to them.
“All Post Offices having this facility will be inter-linked with each other under the plan,” he said.
By next June, all head post offices in the West Bengal Circle would come under the CBS umbrella and by the end of December another five head post offices would be included in this platform.
The service will be inaugurated by secretary of the Department of Posts, Kaveri Banerjee.
The West Bengal circle plans to bring all head post offices under the CBS platform by June 30, 2015. In December, we plan to roll out five more. In each succeeding month around ten head post offices will be migrated, the sources said.
As part of the India Post’s end-to-end ‘IT Modernisation Project 2012’ aimed to equip itself with modern tools and technologies, the CBS will enable customers to operate their accounts and avail account-related services from any post office in the country.
