In a new Aadhaar-linked facility, the Maharashtra Government has developed an online repository for important documents such as certificates and degrees, which are frequently required to apply for a job and other services.
The ‘Maha Digital Locker’ will end the hassle of physically carrying important documents such as education and property certificates.
“Our State has made a lot of progress in egovernance and even the Central Government has praised us for our work in the IT field. Even this new programme has earned the appreciation of the Centre,” Director of the IT department of the State Secretariat, Virendra Singh said.
Elaborating on the specifics of the programme, Singh said, “Everyone who has an Aadhaar card can use the e-locker facility by logging in at elocker.maharashtra.gov.in. The Aadhaar number will be the key to open the person’s account. That person can upload and save scanned copies of all his important documents and can retrieve them whenever required.”
He added that uploading certificates like those related to birth, marriage, income and caste certificates on the e-locker will ensure that there is no need to carry them in the physical format when they are needed for educational or job applications.
“We will also get employers signing up with us so that they can directly access their candidate’s documents from us. But this will all be secure. No third person will be able to get access to a particular person’s personal information,” Singh said.
He said whenever a person applies for a document or a certificate at any SETU (project) office, a copy of it would be uploaded by the gram panchayat, tehsil or collectorate office.
When asked to comment on the security features of the e-locker that would prevent its misuse, Singh said all the documents of a person would be protected by a One Time Password (OTP) that would be sent to the user’s mobile phone every time he tries to log in with his Aadhaar number.
