Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu has announced cities selected for the NDA government’s flagship Smart City project. He announced names of 98 smart cities in India that account for 35% of India’s urban population.

“State/UTs & urban local bodies have an important role to play in the implementation of Smart City mission. Smart Cities need Smart People, we need people’s co-operation to move forward in our mission,” he said while addressing a press conference in New Delhi.

13 cities from Uttar Pradesh, 12 from Tamil Nadu, 10 from Maharashtra, 7 from Madhya Pradesh, 3 each from Bihar and Andhra Pradesh are included in smart cities. However, Centre refrains from taking a call on whether Rae Bareily or Meerut should be UP’s 13th Smart City.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the criteria and guidelines for 100 Smart Cities to be selected through city challenge competition in June 25. Centre has earmarked Rs 48,000 crore for development of 100 smart cities. All Union Territories, including Delhi, have found place in the list. In the first phase, Centre will pick 20 cities and in the next two years 40 cities each will be selected for receiving Central funding of Rs 500 crore spread over the next five years. Each smart city would get a central assistance of Rs 100 crore per year for five years.
