With India’s new e-waste recycling legislation coming into force this month, Sims Recycling Solutions is pleased to announce that its e-waste recycling facility in Chennai, India, is the latest site to receive certification to the Responsible Recycling (R2) Practices standard. This achievement marks out Sims’ Chennai facility as the first and only e-waste recycling facility in India to hold each of the standards ISO 9001, ISO 14001, BS OHSAS 18001and R2.
Since commencing operations in India five years ago, Sims Recycling Solutions has made a significant contribution to the country’s growing e-waste recycling infrastructure. The company opened its first site in Chennai in 2007 when it acquired Trishyiraya Recycling India Pvt. Ltd. Since then, Sims has opened new sites in Bangalore, Pune and Delhi, growing the company from around fifteen employees in 2007 to ninety employees in 2012.
Sims Recycling Solutions’ Head of Business Development Manager in India, Steven Joseph, said, “As the world’s largest electronics recycler, we are used to operating in heavily regulated environments around the globe. So we welcome the introduction of the new e-waste legislation in India, which we hope will lead to greater sustainability in e-waste recycling. We are also delighted to have received R2 and to be the most certified e-waste recycling company in India, at this most important milestone in the industry’s development.”
R2 is a standard which uses downstream auditing to ensure that electronics recyclers are operating to the highest international environmental, health, safety and security standards. This includes ensuring that customers who receive hazardous materials for export are fully compliant with Sims’ standards in environmental, health and safety performance. It also ensures that there are systems in place to track materials as they move down the supply chain, providing a fully auditable chain of custody.
