Trend Micro has announced that its Deep Security and OfficeScan Intrusion Defense Firewall provide the vulnerability shielding required to quickly protect Windows environments from zero-day threats.
Microsoft had recently made an announcement about active zero-day attacks that leveraged a vulnerability in Microsoft XML Core Services that could allow an attacker to gain control of a user’s system through browser-based attacks. The vulnerability affects all supported releases of Microsoft Windows, and all supported editions of Microsoft Office 2003 and Microsoft Office 2007. No patch is available for this vulnerability at this time as Microsoft has only been able to provide a workaround that is difficult to deploy and may be disruptive to business operations.
The new rule was provided by Trend Micro within two hours of the vulnerability announcement and can be pushed out automatically and without disruption to all vulnerable systems.
“Vulnerabilities provide opportunities for Trend Micro to increase the security of our customers through virtual patching, especially in cases where there are active exploits. Microsoft’s recent announcement offers a particularly rich conversation starter for a Deep Security or OfficeScan IDF discussion,” commented Baburaj Varma, Head Technical Services (India & SAARC), Trend Micro.
“In view of the information, we reckon it as an opportunity to add value and increase security for our customers. Our channel partners consider it as an opportunity here to become a trusted adviser with customers and strengthen their belief that we have the help they need. Users can download a 30-day trial of Trend Micro Deep Security Virtual Patching and our OfficeScan customers should activate the Intrusion Defense Firewall plugin for virtual patching protection,” he added.
